Faversham has a long industrial history reflected in its name, which comes from the Old English for "blacksmith's village". It was a major center of gunpowder manufacture in the 18th century MB which has led to more than one unfortunate incident EB.
There was a Roman staging post on the Watling Street, and it was a site of major Jutish settlement in the early fifth century CE; a Benedictine abbey was founded there in King Stephen's time. SF
